Recently you went to your native village to visit your grandparents. You saw that some of the children in the age group of 5-14 (the age at which they should have been at school) remained at home, were working in the fields or simply loitering in the streets.

Write a letter to the editor of a national daily analysing the problem and offering a solution to it. You are Navtej/Navita, M-114, Mount Kailash, Kanpur.

Sir

Subject:   Bringing children to hack to school

It is a matter of grave concern that a large number of children (in the age group 5-14), the age when they should have been at school are either working in the fields or in factories instead of going to school. All the schemes and missions of the government have failed to deliver.

These children are forced to work in hazardous conditions where there is a high risk of injuries, which sometimes are dangerous since such work is handed over to small children may prove fatal as well. At an age when they should be playing, getting educated, and dreaming of a brighter future, they are made to work in hazardous occupations. The authorities should carry out surprise raids at such places and book the employees under the law. Children should be rehabilitated in childcare homes and in some craft or technical training after school hours to enable their employability on completion of their education. Schemes such as ‘each one teaches one’ may be started.

Yours sincerely

 Navita
