Chapter 16- The Invisible Man Summary Notes and Extra Questions

CHAPTER 16: Summary (In the Jolly Cricketers)

There were four people in the Jolly Cricketers, a pub when Mr Marvel entered, looking for protection, from the Invisible Man who was in close pursuit. They were a barman, a cabman, an off-duty policeman and an American with a revolver. They heard some shouting in the street when the inn door burst open and Marvel entered panting and scared to death. He cried that the Invisible Man was after him and he needed protection from his anger. The people in the pub tried to calm Marvel by ensuring that he was safe and the doors were bolted and that they were all ready to help him, but Marvel was very scared and hid behind the bartender. There was rapping on the front door and then a window was smashed. The policeman wished he had his truncheon with him. The plan was to let the Invisible Man enter from the front door. The man with the black beard held his revolver to shoot the Invisible Man. However, the Invisible man was very sneaky and entered from the back door and was able to catch Mr Marvel by his collar. Mr Marvel started to make frantic efforts to release himself from the clutches of the Invisible Man. The others jumped in to save him as the Invisible Man tried to drag him outside the pub. In the struggle that ensued, the cabman got hold of the Invisible Man, the policeman stamped on his foot and for the first time, the Invisible Man’s voice was heard. Then the Invisible Man left Mr Marvel and went out of the door with the others following him. The American shot five bullets in the direction of the Invisible Man in a semi-circular fashion and managed to hit the Invisible Man who is forced to retreat without Mr Marvel. The failure to catch Marvel upsets the Invisible Man.

Q1. How did the people at the ‘Jolly Cricketers’ help Marvel when he came running to them for help?

Ans. When Marvel opened the door and shouted that the Invisible Man was after him and wanted to murder him, the people inside the pub, the barman, a cabman, a black-bearded American, and a policeman who was off duty were quick to react. Marvel was hidden behind the bartender while the black-bearded American got his revolver out. When the policeman protested that he just couldn’t kill a man in that country, he replied that he planned to shoot at the legs. Griffin entered through the open backyard door and attacked Marvel. He started dragging Marvel towards the door when they all jumped to save him. The policeman stamped on his foot and for the first time, the Invisible Man’s voice was heard. Then the Invisible Man left Mr Marvel and went out of the door with the others following him. The American shot five rounds in the direction where he thought the Invisible Man was standing. He was able to hit him and as everyone started feeling around for his body, the Invisible Man managed to escape.
