INDIA’S FOURTEENTH PRESIDENT: SHRI PRANAB MUKHERJEE

Ours’ India is the greatest democratic country in the world. Indian Constitution provides for the greatest honour to the post of His Excellency President of India. Mr Pranab has now the honour to become the fourteenth President of post-independent India. He is the first politician who could so far navigate his ship to this Augustus dock. He succeeds in Smt. Pratibha Devi Singh Patil after her terms of office has over. He has defeated P.A. Sangma with a wide margin of about 30 per cent votes in the election for the post. His swearing in ceremony took, place on the 25th of July, 2012.

He was born in a small village named as Mirati in Shinghbhoom district of West Bengal on 11th Dec. 1935. Kamata Kinker Mukherjee was his father and Rajlakshmi Mukherjee was his mother. He did his post Graduation in History and Politics from Vidyasagar College. He became a professor at the same college. Later on, he had done his LLB from the University of Calcutta.

He married smt. Subra Mukherjee and blessed with two sons Abhij it and Indrajit respectively. Sharmistha is his daughter. His elder sister’s name is Annapurna Devi.

Mr Mukherjee had also worked as U. D. C. to the Office of Deputy Accounts General, Calcutta and in the Office of the Planning Commission from 24th June 1991 to 15th May 1996.

He took a leap in the field of politics as a member to Indian National Congress during the period 1969 to 1986 and again from 1989 to 2012. In between the period from 1986 to 1989, he also had worked as a member to Rashtriya Samajwadi Congress. He was nominated as President of West Bengal Congress from 2000 to 2010 and Leader of House, Lok Sabha in the year 2004.

He took over his responsibility as Minister to the Ministry of Commerce twice i.e. from 1980 to 1982 and in 1984 as also Minister to the Ministry of Defence from 22 April 2004 to 26 October 2006.

He was acclaimed as an outstanding Parliamentarian by the Parliament Group of India in 1997 and also bagged the prestigious award of Padma Vibhusan in 2008.
