My dear Radha,

It will gladden you to learn that Pinki, my elder sister is engaged to Major Sanwal Das of Dhariwal. You perhaps do not know that the Major is from a well-off family. His parents own thousands of acres of agricultural land. They possess a large parental property. They have a palatial bungalow on Amritsar Road. They are from our own community. They are very nice people. Being so much rich and highly placed in life, the Major is very humble and unassuming. He is very handsome and stoutly built. He is 6! in height and quite stately in appearance. He met Pinki a few days back in the Golden Temple at Amritsar. It was a love and like at first sight in case of dear Pinki and Major Das. Then our family was on its way back from Mata Vaishno Devi of Katra (Jammu).

Major unhesitatingly approached my mother and expressed his desire in very plain words. The mother liked his frankness. She enquired about his family. All of us were amused to know that he is related to us from our distant relation. The things matured promptly. We asked Pinki’s opinion. She, too, in a very straightforward manner gave her consent. My parents wired RaiBahadurJanki Das, the father of the Major. He came along with his wife and close relatives. The engagement was ratified.

Now the date of the marriage has been fixed. It is 26th of the next month. I invite you at least a fortnight in advance. You will stand by me in my hour of great need. After all, it is a royal marriage. It is the first happiness in our family.

Your loving Cousin,

 Seema
