Direct and Indirect Speech Narration Exercise – 1 & 2 (Solved)

Exercise-1

Report the following dialogues in the indirect form of narration:

1.Mohan: Where is your school in England?

John: It is in Oxford.

 Mohan: Have you come on a long holiday?

John: I have only a month’s holiday.

2. Teacher: Rahul, where did you buy this practical file from? Can you buy one for me?

 Rahul: Sir, do you want exactly the same?

 Teacher: Have you brought the file today?

3. John: Can you come to my house tomorrow?

 Mohan: Thank you. I will come in the afternoon.

John: Please come along with your parents.

Mohan: Yes, I will.

4. John: What were you doing, Mary?

 Mary: I was making these paper flowers.

 John: Did you learn to make them at school?

Mary: Yes, I did.

5. Vipul: How are you?

 Sumit: I am well, thank you.

 Vipul: Have you come to this place recently?

Sumit: Yes, we moved in here only a few days ago.

Answers:-

1. Mohan asked John where his school was in England. John replied that it was in Oxford. Mohan asked John if he had come on a long holiday. John replied that he had only a month’s holiday.

2. The teacher asked Rahul where he had bought that practical file from and if he could buy one for him. Rahul inquired from him if he wanted exactly the same one. The teacher asked him if he had brought the file that day.

3. John asked Mohan if he could come to his house the next day. Mohan thanked him and said that he would come in the afternoon. John requested Mohan to come along with his parents. Mohan agreed that he would.

4. John asked Mary what she had been doing. Mary replied that she had been making those paper flowers. John asked again whether she had learnt to make them at school. Mary replied in the positive.

5. Vipul asked Sumit how he was. Sumit thanked him and replied that he was well. Vipul asked him if he had come to that place lately. Sumit replied that they had moved in there only a few days ago.

Report the following dialogues in the indirect form of narration:

1.Mohan: Father, John is visiting today.

Prasad: Did you tell your mother about it?

Mohan: Yes, I did.

 Prasad: We will have tea in the garden.

2. Mrs Prasad: Have some of these bananas, John?

John: Thank you.

 Mrs Prasad: How do you like them?

 John: They are very nice.

3. Lady to the Judge: This man is responsible for the accident.

 Man Lady: No, my Lord. This lady does not know how to drive a car.

Lady: But, Sir, I have been driving my car for the last 12 years without an accident.

4. Mother: Rohit, where did you go?

Rohit: Mom, I went to my friend’s house.

Mother: Have you done your homework?

Rohit: I’ll do it just now.

Answers:-

1. Mohan told his father that John was visiting them that day. Prasad asked Mohan if he had told his mother about it. Mohan replied that he had. Prasad said that they would have tea in the garden.

2. Mrs Prasad asked John to have some of those bananas. John thanked her. Mrs Prasad asked John how he liked them. John replied that they were very nice.

3. Lady told the Judge that, that man was responsible for the accident. The man told respectfully that the lady did not know how to drive a car. The lady pleaded with the respect that she had been driving her car for the last 12 years without an accident.

4. Mother asked Rohit where he had gone. Rohit replied that he had gone to his friend’s house. Mother asked again if he had done his homework. Rohit replied that he would do it just then.
