Meaning:-to accept the challenge

Use:- Mohan challenged him to a wrestling match and he took up the gauntlet

20. To run the gauntlet

Meaning:-to receive blows from all sides; to be criticized on all quarters

Use:- He has run the gauntlet because of his habit of gambling.
