Use:-He was at his wit’s end when he got the news of his failure.

Meaning: –unable to proceed any further

Use:-After working for ten hours, I was at the end of my tether

3 Odds and ends

Meaning: –Remnants

Use:-He gathered his odds and ends and went away.

4. To make both ends meet

Meaning: –to keep expenses within one’s income

Use:-These days it is difficult for a poor man to make both ends meet.

5. Without end

Meaning: –Everlasting

Use:-These days student unrest seems to be without end.

6.A blot on the escutcheon

Meaning: –a disgrace on the reputation of a family

Use:- His bad ways are a blot on the escutcheon.

7. An exodus

Meaning: – the departure of a large body of people. From the Exodus of the Israelites from Egypt under Moses

Use:-These days there is an exodus of people from villages to cities.

8. An eye for an eye

Meaning: –tit for tat; to return evil for evil; retaliate

Use:-He believes in the principle of an eye for an eye.

9. To keep an eye on

Meaning: –to watch carefully

Use:-You should keep an eye on your expenses.

10. To see eye to eye

Meaning: –to be in complete agreement with the views of another

Use:-The two brothers cannot see each other eye to eye.

11. Fabian tactics

Meaning: –a policy of wearing down an opponent by delaying action; harassing an enemy by avoiding open battle

Use:-Fabius Maximus, a Roman Consul, wore down Hannibal by refraining from engaging him in actual battle in the second Public War. The employers adopted Fabian tactics when the workers went on strike.

12. To save one’s face

Meaning: – to avoid disgrace

Use:- In order to save face, the corrupt minister resigned.

13. The fairer sex

Meaning: –Women

Use:-Many battles have been fought for the sake of the fairer sex.

14. Bad faith

Meaning: –dishonest intentions

Use:- I cannot trust him as he is a man of bad faith.

15. In good faith

Meaning: –with honest intentions

Use:- I told him my secret in good faith.

16. A breach of faith

Meaning: – to act contrary to what one had professed

Use:- It was a breach of faith on your part to disclose my secret to my enemies.

17. To fall out

Meaning: –to quarrel

Use:-The two friends have fallen out on a trivial matter.

18. To fall through

Meaning: –to fail

Use:-The plan fell through for want of funds.

19. To fall upon

Meaning: –to attack

Use:-The lion fell upon the lamb.

20. To sail under false colours

Meaning: –to attempt to deceive

Use:-The criminal tried to sail under false colours but was caught.
