SHREWD BOY

Once there was a boy. He lived in a village. He was very clever. His name was Chetoo. He did whatever he pleased to do. He did a lot of harm to the villagers and to their fields, too.

One day he was loitering near a sugar-cane field. He wanted to eat sugar canes. He addressed the field of the sugar cane, “Oh field of sugar-cane, I, the powerful Chetoo, can uproot any number of sugar-canes. I need not fear anyone on the earth. I can enjoy the juicy and sweet sugar-canes as many as I like. But I am gentle and noble. I do not use force for the petty job of the uprooting the sugar-canes.” Then he replied himself, “Oh, dear field Permit your friend and boss Chetoo to take at least a dozen of you.” So saying he entered the field and plucked the best of sugar-canes.

The farmer and the owner of the field who was weeping the loss of his sugar-cane harvest saw to the trick of this clever boy. He wanted to teach him a life lesson. He said, “Listen O Chetoo. I also do nothing without permission. Therefore, good Chetoo permits me to douse you in the ice-cold water of the stream, “Chetoo sank within himself. But he kept up his face. Then the farmer whose name was Kisanji said to himself, “O, Kisanji you douse me gladly in the ice-cold water of the stream.” So saying he caught hold of Chetoo by the neck, first beat the nasty boy black and blue and then threw Chetoo with all his power into the deep water of the stream. He doused Chetoo again and again till the clever boy begged for mercy. The farmer let him go with warming, “Never try to be over-clever.’
