There was a tree near a pond in the village of Ramnagar. There lived a monkey along with other monkeys. All were very happy.

In the pond, there was a pair of crocodiles. They were husband and wife. Once the wife fell seriously ill. The doctor was called in. He prescribed medicine. It was the monkey’s heart which could have a soothing effect and the wife could get well. Now the crocodile knew that _ on the nearby tree many monkeys lived. He called them but none came to him. Then an old monkey who had never been on a joyride in the pond agreed to come to the crocodile. Soon the two became good friends. But it was a friendship of convenience. The old monkey sat on the powerful back of the crocodile and enjoyed the joyride. The crocodile had a number of rounds of the total pond. The monkey was very happy. He had fully enjoyed the outing. He was all praise for his friend—the crocodile.

Now the crocodile brought the monkey in the deep water. He told him of his genuine need—the heart of the monkey as a remedy for the illness of his wife. The monkey was stunned. Now what to do to get out of this difficulty. He scratched his head and said, “My dear this is something very ordinary. Accompany me to the tree. I have kept my heart safe there in the hollow of the tree.”

The crocodile was very happy. He speedily went along with the monkey to the tree. Reaching the tree, the clever monkey gave a high leap and disappeared in the farthest branch of the tree. He saved himself through his presence of mind.

Moral: Monkeys are highly intelligent.
