We were playing football on the lawn. The ball hit a neighbour’s window and broke the glass pane. We had to stop as the ball had landed in the drawing room of our neighbour after breaking the glass-pane. Everyone knew what was coming. So we prepared ourselves to face the music. Our neighbour Ramesh was a veteran of so many such battles. He had earned a lot of notoriety among the children in the neighbourhood. He generally found excuses to pick up quarrels. He appeared at the window. He was in a furious mood. He started calling names. He threatened to break our heads and legs. We were dumbfounded. He continued heaping insults on us and calling our names. We were waiting for him to cool down and throw the ball below back to us. But nothing of this kind happened. At last, with folded hands, we begged him to excuse us for our unintentional act. We hoped to get our ball back and resume the game. But he didn’t relent. All our beggings and pleadings couldn’t move his heart. He sounded more threatening and dangerous. We stood helplessly not knowing how to pacify such a monster. Suddenly a stone came from nowhere and hit the second window of our neighbour. He was not prepared for such a situation. We realised that it was high time for us to run away from the place. We ran towards our respective homes leaving the monster crying and threatening to break our heads and legs.
