Arvind was distracted. He could not concentrate in the class. The incident which had happened that morning shattered him completely. The incident overpowered his mind and thinking. He tried to forget it and concentrate on his studies but in vain. Arvind’s mind was preoccupied. Mohan dominated his mind and thought. Poor Mohan! The son of a poor labourer. His father lost his job in a spinning mill six months ago. He was literally on the road. No job and a big family to support. Besides two children and a wife, he had to support his aged and sick parents. How could he afford to pay the school-fee of his eldest child Mohan? He pleaded but in vain. That morning it was announced by the principal that his name was no more on the role of the school. He failed to deposit his dues for the last six months.
Arvind didn’t enjoy his food that evening. He hesitated and vacillated. Should he narrate the sad story to his father? At last, he resolved to take his father into confidence. Arvind’s father listened to the whole story raptly and asked, “How was Mohan in the class? I mean what kind of student was he?” I replied that he was always among the toppers. Arvind’s father declared with finality, “No, that won’t go. He will be on the role of the school once again. I would pay for all his dues till he completes the school education.” Tears started rolling down from my eyes. I ran away to Mohan’s house to give that good news to him and his parents. His parents thanked God that the world was not yet devoid of human sympathy and kindness. They were sure and I echoed with them that Mohan would never disappoint them or break our dreams.
