Kindness Repaid In ancient Carthage, a slave had a very cruel master. Unable to bear the cruel behaviour of his master, the slave ran away one day. He found a cave in the desert and slept in it. Towards morning he heard a terrible roar. It was the roar of a lion who was lying at the mouth of the cave writhing with pain. The slave went near and pulled out the thorn. The lion felt relieved and the slave left the place. He was soon arrested by the king’s soldiers and brought before the master. The master wanted the slave to be punished according to the law. A runaway slave was brought before a hungry lion in an arena. The lion used to devour the man and that was his just treatment. The same was done with this slave. The lion jumped out of the cage but instead of killing the man, started licking his hand. Amazed, the king wanted to know the reason. On hearing the slave’s story, the king was so pleased that he granted pardon to him and made him a free man.
