On reaching back home the old lady opened the door and realised that her house had been I burgled. She immediately called the police. Neighbours also came to know of the burglary. Soon they started gathering at the old lady’s residence. Everyone was showing sympathy for her. Everyone was giving his or her own version of the incident. The old lady told them that the main gate remained intact and locked. The grills of the side bedroom had been removed. The burglar entered the house through the window. Some people were pondering over the ‘modus operandi’ or the way the operation was performed. The bedrooms, particularly the master bedroom, were in a state of mess and disorder. The burglar couldn’t be alone. It couldn’t be the work of a single person. Perhaps a gang might have executed the operation within half an hour. The old lady had returned from the market not taking more than thirty minutes. They perhaps couldn’t find the keys. Hence, they broke open the drawers. The police arrived as they usually do rather late. “What is the loss?” asked the police inspector. “Twenty thousand rupees in cash and ornaments worth rupees two lakhs,” said the old lady. Why do you keep so much cash and jewellery in the house? An old lady and so much cash and valuables!” The police inspector finished moralising. Then he turned to the neighbours and asked, “What have you to say about the burglary?” Everyone remained silent. Perhaps it was a prudent step. Then a middle-aged woman came forward and said, “I can make a definite guess,” she claimed.”That’s the spirit — a good neighbour!” praised the inspector. The middle-aged lady asked the inspector to move aside and took her in a corner. The police officer was rather irritated. “Out with it what have you to say?” The lady came still closer and put her mouth near the right ear of the inspector. “I guess ” And she stopped. “What’s your guess?” The lady whispered, “It seems to be the work of a burglar.” The police officer laughed and said gravely, “What a great discovery!”
