It was Saturday. Veena got up late. Het` parents had gone to office. Veena remembered that had she planned a get-together at her house at 11 am. All her close friends and classmates were invited. It was just an informal gathering. She could provide a place and occasion for her young friend. They could enjoy themselves without the eyes of their elders supervising over them and their activities. Veena had made elaborate arrangements. She had prepared cutlets and pakoras for the occasion. She had ordered a big pineapple cake. The guests had the choice of having tea or cold drinks. She was thankful to her parents for they had supported her in all her efforts. Without their active help, she couldn’t have imagined arranging such a big get-together. She was excited but a little worried. What if no one turned up or her close friends stayed away. Her fears proved false. Around 11 am, her friends started coming one by one. Within a few minutes, there was a gathering of fifteen young boys and girls shouting and crying at the top of their voices. After having a round of cold drinks and snacks, the real celebration started. The music system was played on its full volume. They danced and shouted together on Bollywood film songs. When everyone was dancing to his or her heart out, a loud bang was heard on the door. The celebrations stopped. Neighbours stood outside. They were in a furious mood. Veena tried to cool them down but they were not relenting. “Where are your parents?” asked my immediate neighbour, Mohan Lal. “You have become a nuisance — an unbearable nuisance! Is this the way civilised persons behave in?” Veena felt sorry and assured them down such an incident would never be repeated. The neighbours went away pacified. But what a cold ending of their warm celebrations! It was nothing less than an anticlimax to her great idea of a grand get-together party.
